  • The Caverns
    A farmer tending to his work noticed something peculiar about his herd of cattle. On nearly every hot day, the herd would gather in one place, but rather than being under a tree, they gathered out in the open where the sun would continue its heat unimpeded. The demands placed on the farmer were great, and so he never took the time to study this curiousity. One day however, his curiousity got the better of him and so he walked out to the fields where the cattle were standing.
  • More on the Caverns
    It was then that he made his discovery. Cool air was pouring out of a crevass in the ground like a giant wind machine. That explained why the cattle were there, but where did this crevass lead? A short spelunk into it the next day revealed a vast cavern system below. It would take much more than a day's journey to explore it all. The word spread about his discovery and soon scores of adventurers poured into the crevass to map out the caverns. However, Most of them never returned....
  • Still More on the Caverns
    Those that did return had incredible stories to tell. Findings of Ancient Dragons, whole civilizations underground, and vast riches were told. It began to become clear that the size of the caverns below were Colossal... one might even say Stupendous. Centuries have now passed, and fearful citizens have sealed off the entrance with Diamond Golems. Not so much to keep people from going IN, but to prevent whatever is in there from coming OUT. Today, things are different. A growing sentiment of the public is that they need to confront their fear and at least find out what is in there. One cannot live in fear forever. The Redleaf family has been well known for explorations. You and your father once teamed up to explore the great Ice Waste to the north, where you defeated foes of unimaginable power. But you were just a kid then. Today, they call upon you as they once did your father. Today they call upon you, Kyle Redleaf, to flag every creature dwelling in your exploration of {THE STUPENDOUS} {CAVERNS!}
  • Even more!
    Word has rapidly spread of your attempt to defeat the guardians and explore the caverns. As a result a rag-tag village has sprung up. You will need to harness the resources of this village to fuel your expedition.
  • Uncle's Gift
    Your Uncle, Kimtrell Redleaf, is very supportive of your intention to explore the Stupendous Caverns. He tells you of a gift he has prepared for you. It lies near the entrance to the caverns, buried directly under the Garden of Revelation, he explains, the sooner you find it, the better off you will be.
  • Lore
    The Stupendous Caverns have been the subject of Legends and Lore for many generations. Rumors of ancient dragons, bottomless pits, flowing lava, have always been a part of the stories told about this place. Among the more outlandish rumors is a story that somewhere deep within the heart of the caverns is some sort of elemental control room that is capable of controlling the world. All the memories of books read and stories heard about the Great Caverns excite your imagination to new heights. You move on with renewed determination to raise troops and break through the Diamond Golem Guardians.
  • Capital
    You've managed to build up your camp into a fine city, whose citizens engage in every support activity of the exploration. Your trusted friends and advisors remind you that funds will run out quickly, unless you can establish this base as a Capital.
  • Progress Report
    It's been 1 month already and progress is slow. However, there have been no major setbacks and you and the troops are optimistic about this exploration. Scouting groups report signs of civilization deeper into the caverns.
  • 2nd Progress Report
    2 Months now, and progress is sure and steady. The 2 neighbors were an interesting find. Perhaps even more strange findings await. Persuading the 2 neighbors to join our cause should help with cash flow a bit. This expedition sure is expensive.
  • Plague Warning
    Our medical staff today uncovered evidence that these caverns are struck with periodic plagues and diseases. Apparently chances are greatest for a plague to strike at the beginning of a new month for unknown reasons. It may be wise to take precautions near the beginning of each month, until a cause is known.
  • Note
    The word is spreading about your expedition. You hear that even more recruits are coming to get a piece of the action of the Stupendous Caverns. It might be best to build the appropriate town structures to receive them.
  • Good News
    Good News!! Some advance exploration scouts have discovered a clearing in the Caverns where sunlight shines through. In the clearing an old Seer has taken up residence and is offering to teach the {Town Portal} spell as a reward for capturing 3 Rust Dragons! This would triple the speed of the exploration! You order your men to make for that clearing Post-Haste!
  • 7 month message
    The expedition has gone on now so long that it's lost some of its earlier fame. The people consider it somewhat routine. No more extra recruits line up to join the party. However, you've established control of so much territory, you are able to sustain the expedition without them. It will be along road ahead. You estimate that only 33% of the total area of these caverns have been mapped out. There's something strange about these caverns, though. Almost unnatural. You begin to ponder the origin of this place.
  • Salaries
    Bad news... Your armies have swelled to vast numbers and have now formed the USCE. (Union of Stupendous Caverns Explorers). They require a raise in salary or else they'll strike. This will cost you 2500 additional Gold out of the treasuries each week.
  • Weekly Salary
    Payroll Time! As you sign the weekly payroll you curse under your breath, Dang Teamsters.
  • News about a Journal
    Interesting News came through the ranks to you today: Journals of an earlier expedition were found by scouting parties in the deeper levels of the caverns. It seems that these are the records of an exploration party that was launched centuries ago! Probably not too long after the first discovery by that ancient farmer! Deciphering the records is a problem, though. They are written in an unfamiliar language. You order your scholars to begin work on a translation. To start, they will have to begin relearning an ancient language.
  • 1st Translation
    Your scholars have managed to glean a few bits of information from the ancient journals. They've managed to translate the word for day as well as numbers 1-10, and have therefore determined that the journal reads like a diary. They are still working on translating the document, but one thing in particular stands out: The journal ends abruptly at day 969.
  • 2nd Translation
    More words have been deciphered. Most of the journal seems to cover the day to day events during the expedition. However, on day 969 a different hand-writing from the original author appears. It reads something like this: No time .. see day one hundred and fifty-nine. Naturally, your learned men have studied that page, but the translation still eludes them...
  • Last Translation
    Finally, the words at day 159 of the journal have been translated. In summary, the expedition discovered a tunnel filled with stone idols on this day and named it Easter Tunnel. So named apparently because the idols reminded them of the stone-faces on Easter Island. But then, the handwriting changes again. It looks like it was added afterwards. It reads, Recover the bones at the base of the last idol, then Go and Find the burial place that is guarded by the Eternal Phoenix and dig at the foot of the center grave. Hmm.. it seems quite cryptic, but it could be valuable information. You order your scholars to continue translating and to inform you of any more discoveries.
  • Reminder of the translation
    Recover the bones at the base of the last idol.... Dig at the Center Grave of the Eternal Phoenix... Those words from the journal just seem to echo in your head over and over.
  • 1 Year!!
    Today is your One Year Anniversary since the expedition began! This calls for a rousing celebration. All troops and heroes take time out to throw a grand party. Music and Dancing abounds. For a while you forget about the hard challenges you've been through and enjoy the reprise. The cost of throwing the party seems quite negligible compared to what you've discovered.

By the way, Sky-blue, you got a last name?, you ask. Montoya, he says as he jumps on his big wolf and rides it back to his Stronghold with its tail between its legs.

Stories of Ghosts always used to give you the creeps, but somehow these Ghosts are different. They radiate a kind of peace. At last, one of them speaks, We are the three leaders of the first expedition into these caverns. Centuries ago from your time we established a settlement here and were proud to call this place our home. It was paradise. Neither the three of us, nor our subjects ever desired to return to the surface again. The Ghost pauses, as if remembering something profoundly content and then continues; But, then they came. Legions of them. Out of cracks, from under rocks, perhaps from the center of the great earth itself. They destroyed our civilization. Our people fought bravely, and the memory of their courage wells tears into our eyes even now, but in the end we were defeated. The few who were left, buried the three of us here. Hans to the North, Charles to the South, and myself between them. But even then, raiders and evil beings came and desecrated these graves. They dragged out our bodies and left them in a heap in a dark tunnel with those stone idols. As you open your mouth to respond with a flood of burgeoning questions, the Ghost continues... apparently you're not going to get a word in edgewise until he finishes. That would have been the end of things were it not for a Great Wizard named Skeeve. He had the foresight to preserve our bodies magically, and to place Phoenixes here as eternal guards to this shrine. The river of fire you traveled to get here was also created by Him. But even his great power could not hold out against the hordes of evil. He was not killed, but turned. Turned into an immortal enemy, that you must eventually face. My name is Watts. We are deeply in your debt for returning our bones. As a reward you may take this relic that our expedition found. It is a legendary item from the dawn of time itself. I am told that it will attract 50% more recruits and will bring you luck in battle. Bring it to your Home Base. The journals you recovered that helped you find us should also tell you where to dig. It is buried at the foot of one of these three graves. One last thing. Seek out the Wizard Skeeve. He has been turned to evil, but if you can defeat him, he can tell you the great secret he learned before he was turned. The battle will not be easy, though. Stay sharp, and think carefully. We return now to rest in peace. With that, each of the 3 ghosts returns to his respective graves and they are seen no more.

The chamber emits a faint hum, and to the right of the entrance appears to be a set of controls. Not having the slightest clue what the controls do, your eye centers on a large Red Knob in the center. Oh what, the Hell, you exclaim, and with that you push in the Red Knob. In a matter of milliseconds, the Great Wizard Skeeve completes his shout with the entirety of its abject terror as he falls forward into your arms. His terror is only matched now by his expression of sheer bemusement, as he realizes that in milliseconds, his fate has taken a 180 degree turn. As he extracts himself from your proximity, he regains his composure, dusts himself off and addresses you with a voice that speaks of ageless wisdom. {Well, shucks, I should have known.} Known, what, you ask. {Stasis Chamber. It's really not such a bad prison. The sentence could} {be 1 hour or a million years, yet the occupant knows not the passage} {of time.} What exactly is going on? {Well, I'm afraid you'll have to fill me in on a few details, first.} {First of all, let me have a look at this Chronometer on the control panel.} Skeeve glances at what appears to be some kind of window with glowing numbers. {Great Globular Clusters!!}, he exclaims. {It's been over a thousand} {years! And it feels like only seconds. I hope there are no side effects.} Sir?, you prod. {Sorry. Sorry. I know this must seem strange to you. Listen, I'll tell you} {what's happened, and you can fill in the blanks that I was not.. er..} {present for.} {But first let's disassemble this wicked chamber. It gives me the creeps.} {I don't relish the thought of losing another 1000 years.} You watch in awe as Skeeve's hands fly over the control panel, and within seconds the jail or as he calls it Stasis Chamber begins dismantling.
