  • Cicero
Rome's greatest orator is currently under house arrest on one of his country estates to the east of Rome.
  • Christians
The Great Fire of 64 AD was deliberately set by the Christians. Therefore, Nero will be feeding a few of them to the lions soon.

  • Arena
There is an entrance to the Arena in downtown Campus Martius, and another on the Aventine Hill south of Nero's Golden Palace. There is rumoured to be a third entrance, outside of Rome to the east...

События

  • Intro1
Ecce Roma Aeterna: Behold Eternal Rome! What great generals have defended her, and what clever politicians shaped her! Supreme object of desire for both ambitious Romans and for marauding barbarians and would-be conquerers. The glory of Ancient Rome shines on forever!
  • Intro2
Behold now as the Great Gods summon Rome's greatest heroes and her most dangerous enemies to contest for mastery over Eternal Rome. In the spectacle of this ultimate struggle, the greatness of the city revealed will bring glory to its gods: Jupiter, Mars, Apollo, Juno, Minerva, and Diana, to name but a few.
  • Intro3
The factions are as follows: Red=the Legion, Blue=the Patricians, Green=the Plebeans, Purple=the Emperor, Tan=the Huns, Orange=the Carthaginians, and Teal=the Slaves.
  • Arena1
The Great Colosseum of Rome was unique in the ancient world. Imagine, an arena seating 50,000--and dedicated to presenting the most extravagant blood sports in history.
  • Arena2
For example, to celebrate his triumph over Dacia (modern Romania and eastern Hungary), Emperor Trajan had 123 days of games during which an astounding 11,000 beasts were killed. (It is not recorded how many Bestarii, or animal-fighting gladiators, were killed in the process.)
  • Arena3
Of course, the Romans loved to gamble on their games, and in both the chariot races of the Circus Maximus and the gladiatorials of the Colosseum there were huge fortunes to be made. Each faction in the struggle for Eternal Rome has entered a champion what is sure to be the greatest free-for-all of all time.
  • Arena4
All of the gladiators sport rugged blue faces. Don't worry if you lose yours--just send another hero through the one way teleporters into the arena and get revenge. There is plenty of gold and such to be had there, and you can even find friends to join your army, but beware: It is easy to enter the arena but very difficult to leave!
  • Arena5
The Colosseum of Rome is sometimes called the Coliseum, or even the Flavian Amphitheatre, after the family of Emperor Vespasian, who had it built. Ave Caesar, Morituri Te Salutant...Good luck, and watch out for ambushes!
  • Spotlight1
The Emperor faction is purple. The main purple hero is Nero. The main 'town' is Nero's Domum Aureum (Golden Palace) in the centre of the map. The Emperor was guarded by the Praetorian Guard, the only legion allowed within the walls of Rome. The Praetorians are represented by Pit Fiends.
  • Hun1
You are Attila, great leader of the Huns. Although some other barbarian leaders may have been more successful in sacking Rome itself, none ever matched the size of your empire.
  • Hun2
From the Ural River and the Caspian Sea to the Rhine; from the Baltic Sea and the Volga to the Danube and the Black Sea, you, Attila, controlled it all. Historically, the Huns made it as far as the Po river in northern Italy, but now the Gods have given you a chance at Eternal Rome herself!
  • Legion1
You are Septimius Severus, a general of North African descent. With your loyal Rhine legions at your back, you have decided to become Emperor, now that Commodus the Mad is dead. Like Julius Caesar and others before and after you, you take your troops and march on Rome.
  • Legion2
You have established your camp to the northwest of Rome and now plan your attack on the city itself. Backing your play is your son Caracalla, who stands to become Emperor after you should you succeed.
  • Patrician1
The Roman Republic is dying, but your pride will not permit you to stand idly by. The Roman upper class came in three ranks: Equites (400,000+ sestercii), Senator (1,000,000 sestercii), and Nobilis (at least one ancestor served as Consul, Republican Rome's highest office). There were only 600 Senators at one time.
  • Patrician2
Your most immediate foes are the Gracchi brothers, Tribunes of the people. Their mob is everywhere in Rome and you may well encounter them in the streets. They can be recognized by their faction colour of green.
  • Pleb1
You are the Gracchi brothers, Tiberius and Gaius. Tribunes of the common people of Rome, you champion their rights. Unfortunately, it is very difficult for small businesses and small farms to compete with the large factories and plantations that use large quantities of slaves. As a result, hundreds of thousands of Roman citizens are unemployed.
  • Pleb2
Your main opposition will be the wealthy Senators who oppose your proposals to aid the poor. Your land distribution plans are especially disturbing to them, so watch out for assassins.
  • Carthage1
You are Hannibal, son of Hamilcar Barca, and the greatest general of the Carthaginians. You are about to take revenge on Rome for the death of your brother Hasdrubal, whose severed head was lobbed into your camp one morning. You have campaigned up and down all of Italy, and now are ready to attack Rome herself.
  • Carthage2
Historically, Hannibal never actually attempted to storm the walls of Rome. Could he have taken the city had he tried? Now you can find out!
  • Emperor1
You were born Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus, but now everyone calls you Emperor Nero. Although you have murdered your step-brother Britannicus, your mother Agrippina, and two of your wives, you actually deplore violence and have been known to forbid gladiators from killing each other. You can sing, dance, and write poetry.
  • Emperor2
Historically, Nero succumbed to despair when Gaul revolted, and killed himself. However, had he stuck it out, he might well have reigned for another 20 years. Care to try ruling Eternal Rome?
  • Gladiator1
You are Spartacus. You learned to fight in the army, but was enslaved after deserting and forced to become a gladiator. You lead a successful slave revolt in Capua, near Mount Vesuvius. Now, with 70,000 freed slaves at your back, you march on Rome.
  • Gladiator2
You hope to get help from within Rome's walls from some of the gladiators of Rome. They have given you access to a secret tunnel by which you can enter the city undetected. For freedom!
  • Spotlight2
The Patrician faction is blue. This faction has many heroes. All were Senators who also served as generals during the 1st century BC. Their 'towns' are two estates: One in the north and one in the south. Their main troop type is the 'Senator', represented here by Mages.
  • History1
According to legend, the Trojan hero Aeneas escaped the sack of Troy by the Greeks, and, by way of Africa, arrived in Italy, where his descendent Romulus founded Rome and became its first king in 753 BC. Rome was later conquered by the Etruscans, and remained an Etruscan tributary until 509 BC, when the Romans under Lucius Junius Brutus drove out the Etruscan king and declared Rome a free Republic.
  • Spotlight 3
The Plebean faction is green. They have two main heroes, the Gracchi, who were brothers and Tribunes of Rome. The Green 'towns' are in the north and east of Rome, but they have eyes everywhere. Their troops are common citizens and rabble, represented by Dwarves and Peasants respectively.
  • History2
It took Rome until 272 BC to conquer all of Italy south of the Po river. They had had to fight the Etruscans, the Greeks, and even the Gauls. Rome's next foe was Carthage, a powerful trading empire based out of northern Africa, and the Romans and the Carthaginians fought three bitter wars known as the Punic Wars. It was during the second war that the great general Hannibal swept up from Spain to take the Roman colonies in France.
  • Spotlight4
The Legion faction is red. The main red hero is Septimius Severus, and the red 'town' is his camp just outside Rome to the northwest. The Legion troops are represented by Pikemen and Swordsmen, although the typical Legionnary used both.
  • History3
Hannibal avoided fighting his way along the heavily fortified coast and instead performed a remarkable flanking maneuver by going up the Rhone into the Alps, crossing them, elephants and all, in the winter, and striking down the Po. The Romans lost several legions trying to stop Hannibal, who stayed in Italy for 14 long years, taking almost all of the Roman tributary towns during that time.
  • Spotlight5
The Gladiator/Slave faction is teal. Their hero is Spartacus. In this scenario, the Spartacus HQ is southwest of Rome (historically Spartacus never attacked Rome itself) and the gladiators have a secret underground base as well. The gladiators are represented by Minotaurs.
  • History4
The Romans, always stubborn and dangerous, struck at Hannibal indirectly by invading Africa. Hannibal hurried home to defend Carthage, but was defeated at Zama, in 202 BC. Eventually Rome destroyed the city of Carthage utterly (Cato: Carthago delendo est), to prevent it from ever threatening them again. The Romans then went on to take all of the former Carthaginian colonies in Spain and became the masters of the western Mediterranean.
  • Spotlight6
The Carthaginian faction is Orange. The main hero is Hannibal. Hannibal's HQ is to the SE of Rome (historically he threatened Rome from all sides). The Orange forces are represented by the Stronghold troops in general, with Behemoths representing the war elephants.
  • History5
Rome continued to fight wars of conquest with the other Mediterranean powers, and by 133 BC they owned the entire sea. At this point the arrival of huge wealth in booty and slaves began to crumble the conservative values of the Republic. By 80 BC Romans were fighting Romans, bitter civil wars in which the victors ruthlessly purged the vanquished. First Marius, then Sulla became bloody dictators, setting a precedent for those who followed.
  • Spotlight7
The Hun faction is Tan. The tan heroes are Attila and his brother Bleda. Attila's HQ is to the northeast of Rome, beyond a river symbolic of the Po. The nomadic Huns are represented by the Nomad troop, but the town type is random.
  • History6
After Marcus Crassus put down the Spartacus slave revolt of 73-71 BC, Rome entered the period of its history most studied by scholars. Ergo, if you want to know more, read a book! Summary: Crassus, Pompey, and Caesar formed a triumvirate alliance, but after Crassus was killed fighting Parthians in Asia Minor Caesar and Pompey fought each other. What are friends for, eh? Caesar won and became de facto ruler of Rome.
  • Spotlight8
Pink is a faction of heroes. The eight pink heroes run the gamut from the legendary Aeneas to the well-documented Marcus Aurelius. Pink has no castle. The heroes are in the underworld, awaiting the will of the gods. After the first week these heroes become available to all the other factions.
  • History7
In 44 BC, a cabal of Senators assassinated Julius right in front of the Senate (Hey--how come our Senators never do things like that, eh?) and Rome was plunged into a new civil war. Marcus Antonius attempted to seize power but in the end it was Caesar's grand-nephew Octavian who triumphed in 27 BC and renamed himself Augustus. Weary of civil strife, Rome allowed Princeps (first citizen) Augustus to reign for 41 years.
  • History8
Augustus was succeeded by Tiberius, Gaius (Caligula), Claudius, and Nero. Tiberius was conservative, Caligula was a monster, Claudius a decent administrator, and Nero a complex but unstable character. He committed suicide in 68 AD, ending the reign of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. Several generals then contested for the throne.
  • History9
In 69 AD Vespasian established the Flavian dynasty. He was succeeded in turn by his sons Titus and Domitian. Domitian provided heavy-handed rule for fifteen years, but eventually he was assassinated by his wife. General Nerva then assumed the throne, and proved to be the first of the Five Good Emperors (apparently the odds of getting five good ones in a row are pretty small).
  • History 10
Nerva was succeeded in 98 AD by the Spanish-born Trajan, who was a very able general, the only one to successfully campaign beyond the Danube river. After Trajan it was all downhill for the Roman Empire, at least in terms of size. Trajan chose his gay cousin Hadrian to succeed him, and Hadrian proved quite an enlightened Emperor. Following him ware Antonius Pius and Marcus Aurelius.
  • History 11
Marcus Aurelius was an able general, philosopher, and writer, but he botched his otherwise excellent record by selecting his demented son Commodus to succeed him. Commodus proved to be as mad as Caligula, but he reigned for 12 long years before being assassinated by a wrestler, bringing the Antonine Dynasty to a close.
  • History12
After another civil war, the grim Septimius Severus took power and established the Severan dynasty, the last of whom died in 235 AD. After that the Empire was moribund, although it took another 241 years for the death throes to end and the last Emperor to be deposed. So there you have it: 12 volumes of history compressed into 12 events. No more history--Enjoy the rest of your game!
  • Circus1
Your son-in-law lost a large sum of money betting on the chariot races. Now he has to borrow from you!
  • Circus2
Your daughter sent an expensive gift to her favourite gladiator. Naturally, you had to pay for it!
  • Circus3
A riot broke out after the Games, and some rioters burned your friend's house down. He comes to you for a loan
  • Circus4
Your wife actually won some money betting on her lucky colour. By Mercury, it was about time!
