While initially skeptical about your story of the Thern conspiracy due to his deep religious convictions, he is finally won over by Dejah Thoris' sincerity. Although I long resisted their exhortations, the Therns have succeeded in goading the independent Jeddaks and Powers of Barsoom into war against Helium with visions of glory and power. We have heard that great military operations have begun in the lands to the east, both north and south. The two most dangerous Powers are Ras Thavas of Morbus and Phor Tak of Jahar. Let me tell you more about them as we walk toward Kaol.

    • Сообщение: Kulan Tith, Jeddak of Kaol, continued his story. Ras Thavas and Phor Tak were friends and students at the University of Helium. I was also in their class, but not friendly with them. It seemed to me that they cared too much for science and too little for people. I believe that events have proven me correct; but I am jumping ahead too quickly. As you know, Dejah Thoris, a course in Ethics is required for graduation from the University of Helium. Ras Thavas and Phor Tak argued unsuccessfully against this requirement, telling the Requirements Committee and anyone else who would listen that the science they studied knew no ethical limits, but must be followed for the sake of knowledge alone. To them, human life counted for nothing when weighed against advances in knowledge. Because Ras Thavas and Phor Tak were brilliant students, their unorthodox views were tolerated for a time. They quickly advanced to the point that they were teaching students of their own and directing research, but they never completed the Ethics requirement and never received their formal credentials. Finally, alarmed by the directions that their studies were taking, Tardos Mors himself ordered them expelled from the University. Ras Thavas and Phor Tak were furious, of course, and vowed revenge. But enough of the story for today. Let us enjoy the hospitality of Kaol.

    • Сообщение: Kulan Tith completed his story of Ras Thavas and Phor Tak. Let me tell you something of the researches of Ras Thavas and Phor Tak. Ras Thavas became an expert in biomedical technology. Surgical techniques he pioneered are still taught at the University. Despite his many accomplishments, rumors began to circulate that he was testing new surgical procedures on unwitting subjects taken from the poorer residents of Lesser Helium who were treated free at the University Hospital. He as much as admitted to the rumors, asking the University officials would they rather he practice his techniques on the Nobles of Helium? What we know of the subsequent movements and activities of Ras Thavas comes largely from a traveler named Tadus Jor who passed this way after escaping from Thavas. He was headed south in a great hurry, attempting to put as much distance as he could between himself and the evil mastermind. He told of a great secret he had stolen that might make great distances meaningless, but he left before explaining what he meant. While it was difficult to separate fact from fiction in his story, we learned a great deal. When he left the University, Ras Thavas first settled in Toonol in the Great Toonolian Marshes to the north of the Kaolian Forest. He felt that the abundance of animal life in the marshes would provide him ample subjects for his experiments. Tales of unsavory experiments with human subjects upset the residents of Toonol, who drove him from the city. He moved to the nearby dead city of Morbus, constructing a new city devoted to his researches. Where he gets his funding is unclear, but rumors tell of unspeakable medical services performed for the wealthy in exchange for great sums of gold. Because Ras Thavas stayed in contact with Phor Tak after their expulsion from the University of Helium, the traveler could also tell us something about Phor Tak's recent activities. After his expulsion, Phor Tak headed for Jahar in the Valley of Hohr to the southeast of Kaol. He put his scientific talents at the service of Tul Axtar, the mad and cowardly Jeddak of Jahar. Phor Tak is an expert on machines and automation. As I recall our university days, it was his dream to replace all human workers with robot men, not to make human lives easier but eventually to eliminate most humans and make Barsoom a perfectly logical planet ruled by machine intelligence -- with himself as supreme leader, of course. Although Phor Tak is not the titular ruler of Jahar, he is the true power behind the recent expansion of Jaharian influence to the nearby cities of Tjanath, Ghasta, Jhama, and U-Gor. How far he has advanced the science of robotics we do not know. Ras Thavas and Phor Tak maintain an alliance, with each seeking to expand his respective empire. Of the two, I deem Phor Tak the more dangerous. Our scouts report that he personally leads a large army of robots and other troops. Even so, I would advise dealing with Ras Thavas first, since his forces are so close to the north. In addition, Ras Thavas is unlikely to leave Morbus because he is devoted to his experiments. He will be easy to find. We foresee that unless something is done to check them, they may soon rule all of Barsoom.

It broke into two pieces as it hit the Barsoomian atmosphere. One half formed the crater that now holds the Kaolian Forest. The other, hitting to the northeast, disrupted the flow of water from the northern ice cap into the Great Canal System built by our ancestors. The second crater itself is an uninhabited desert. To the west of the second crater is the only large swamp area left on Barsoom, the Great Toonolian Marshes.

We have never succeeded in dealing with them other than by force of arms, but John Carter is well respected by them (or at least feared) and may find some help among them. One final thing

Hovan Du met a strange man in Ras Thavas' laboratory named Vad Varo, who claims to be from Jasoom. Vad Varo was Ras Thavas' laboratory assistant until he fell in love with Valla Dia, a young woman whose body was stolen by Ras Thavas. For an especially large fee, Ras Thavas switched her young body with the old body of Xaxa, cruel and corrupt Jeddara of Phundahl. Hovan Du promised Vad Varo just before they escaped to seek help to rescue Valla Dia. Will you help?
